ABC NEWS PRODUCTIONS INTERNSHIP OUTLINE Who we are: ABC News Productions
(ABCNP) develops and prduces a wide variety of programming for a number
of cable TV networks. This includes a majority of “Biography” programs
that air on A&E. Some include the Biographies of Private Jessica Lynch,
om Hanks, Carlos Santana and Dr. Phil. ABCNP also produces
documentaries for Discovery Channel, Discovery Health, TLC, Court TV,
Travel Channel and ABC Family. Some of our documentaries include 9/11
Babies, Crime Against Amrica, The CIA in the Middle East, The Court TV
Safety Challenge and Gangs of New York. Our interns: Interns are
selected from a large group of undergraduate applicants on the basis of
a demonstrated commitment to journalism, a high level of academic and
extra-curricular achievement, a positive attitude toward contributing to
our workplace, and the ability to bring a diverse background or
experience to ABC News Productions. Applicants submit a letter and
resum, and are interviewed in person or by phone when not in the
Tri-State area. Our program: Interns do work comparable to that done by
Production Associates, with whom the interns will primarily work.
Interns are infomally assigned to a team, comprising a Producer,
Associate Producer, and one or more Production Associates. Interns then
receive training in library research; ABC News database research;
videotape ordering, logging, and dubbing - and many other
documentary-specifi tasks. Three phases of training Tape dubbing,
database research, and use of ABCs research center are mandatory for
all interns. From this, and from their work with their production teams,
interns will learn skills that are highly specialized to televiion and
difficult to obtain outside of the professional sphere. They will learn
about professional conduct and responsibility as it applies to the
cooperative environment of television, how to work toward meeting
deadlines, and how the creative and technical aspects of the vide
medium work together. ABC News Productions coordinates its intern
program with ABC News Human Resources. Care is taken to obey all
relevant corporate guidelines and state and federal laws. Interns MUST

ABC News is offering internships to qualified students interested in
pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. Interns will be placd on ABC
News programs and in departments in our New York office where they will
be exposed to all aspects of network news. Interns will gain knowledge

Anatomy Media– Television/Video Internship
A production company/creative agency specializing in the promotion and
maketing of major television networks and the production of film
trailers seeks a detail-oriented intern with an interest in post
production. The intern will be expected to take on administrative duties
(filing, copying, answering phones, etc.) as well as traditional
Production Assistant responsibilities such as logging and dubbing tapes,
going on runs, and conducting internet research. Because Anatomy Media
is a small company, there is a lot of opportunity to learn about the
industry and experience what it is like to work in this field. Skills:
College Junior or Senior. General office skills; cmputer literate and
internet savvy; strong communication skills (verbal and written) and

Are you interested in a college internship at CBS News?
CBS News is offering internships or undergraduate/graduate students
enrolled in the schools of Journalism, Broadcasting and Communications.
It is an educational program designed for students interested in
pursuing a career in those fields. The following information will answer
many of your questions.
Positios available. The number is limited and each is assigned on a
first-come, first-served basis. Placement is at the sole discretion of
the Director.
Time required. The internship requires a commitment of two full days per
week minimum during the fall an spring and full time during the summer.
Duties. They would vary depending upon departmental assignments. Duties
include but are not limited to: logging tapes, coordinating scripts,
research, viewer mail, and clerical duties.
Eligibility reuirements. You must currently be attending an accredited
college, entering your junior or senior years, and majoring in Broadcast
Journalism or Mass Communications. Participants should have basic
compute skills as well as excellent written and oral communication
skills and have at least a GPA of 3.0. Other eligible majors: Public
Relations, Marketing, Advertising, English, History, International
Studies, Poliical Science, Computer Science and Finance.
Additional requirements? CBS must receive written confirmation from your
college stating that you are receiving course credit for the internship.

Sunday Morning. (NY) A news broadcast reviewing events of the preceding
week, celebrating human accmplishments and achievements and journeying
through the world of fine art, music, nature, sports, science and
Americana. Student should be organized, have strong interpersonal skills
and basic computer knowledge.BET Nightly News. (NY & DC) BET Nightly News is a newscast of record
that addresses topics, which are important to people of color. BET
Nightly News is produced by CBS News and has an editrial responsibility
to Black Entertainment Television. There is a diverse staff that
produces a 30-minute weeknight newscast. The mission is stated in the
newscast open and that is, it covers Our world, ourculture and our
issues.
Although the BET Nightly News is targeted to people of color,
the objective is to give a real sense of the news of the day and news
from a Black perspective to all viewers who tune into the broadcast. The
Bet Nightly News is looking fr interns who have a strong sense of
social commitment, interns who have a sense of community
and want to
learn how to produce a niche broadcast while bringing a broad base of
journalistic excellence into the produt. Intern should have strong

Up to the Minute. (NY) News every half-hour, combined with newsmaker and

News Productions. (NY) The production company within CBS News that
creates and distributes a diverse mix of original nonfiction and
reality-style programming for domestic d international markets,
including network and cable television, home video, DVD, audio books and
in-flight, as well as schools and libraries. CBS News Productions and
CBS Eye Too Productions produce programs across a wide spectrum of
genes, from history to science to entertainment. Intern should have
knowledge of logging tapes, research experience and general

Newspath. (NY & DC) This unit is responsible for feeding footage to CBS
stations and affiliates. This 24-hour-a-day news service feeds national
and international news, weather, sports, medicine and health reports,
bsiness and consumer news and a broad range of feature stories from
around the world. Intern should have strong written and oral
communication skills.
Radio News. (NY & DC) CBS Radio is Americas news leader, serving radio
stations with hourly newscasts, instnt coverage of breaking stories,
special reports, updates, features, customized reports and news feed
material. Every day, millions of Americans rely on CBS Radio News for
up-to-the-minute infrmation. Interests in broadcast journalism,
especially radio, a must. Intern should have basic knowledge of tape
editing and computers. Intern should, also, have fundamental concept of
reporting and research.
New Media. (NY) This department isresponsible for CBSNEWS.com website.
Students should have an interest in new media design. Photoshop and HTML
experience a plus. Responsibilities range from scanning images and text
to helping the unit with story conception, design and implementation.
ress Office. (NY) The press office serves as the liaison between CBS
News broadcasts/talent and the media. The department consists of a
director, publicists and publicity assistants who are responsible for
publicizingeach of the national news broadcast. An internship with the
press office is an opportunity to experience public relations in a
fast-paced, professional environment. Intern must be well organized,
have excellent written and oral communication skills. Computer
experience a must.
Advertising & Promotions. (NY) This unit produces the advertising and
promotions for all news broadcasts, which includes, television, radio,
and print promos, as well as affiliate sales tapes. The intern shoul be
interested in television and film production. Have some technical
background. Computer skills helpful.
Broadcast Marketing. (NY) This unit deals with all of the CBS News
broadcasts and acts as a liaiso between CBS News and all CBS
affiliates. An intern assigned to this unit must have a great phone
manner and be able to juggle several projects at one time. The ideal
candidate must be interested in marketing, producton and have some
sales ability. Depending on skills, an intern will
have an opportunity to learn how to book and produce satellite tours and
edit excerpts for affiliate use. At the same time the candidate must be
ptient and capable of handling various clerical assignments. Must enjoy
being a team player and pitching in when needed. There is a certain
amount of typing, research and photocopying. Intern should have skills
in marketing and enjoy writing.

The Museum of Television & Radio in New York invites qualified students
to take part in the ongoing Internship Program, a structured and
rewarding program designed to provide unique insight into the worlds of
network, cable, and international broadcasting, as well as valuable
experience in museum administration. Credit may be available through the

Interns assist Museum staff members in nearly every phase of daily work,

HARPERS MAGAZINE
Harper’s Magazine, the nation’s oldest monthly magazine, is pleased to
offer an art internship program. Although there are no specific
application criteria, most interns in the past have been graduate and
undergraduate students or people recently out of school. The position is
also well suited to a freelance graphic designer or illustrator seeking
to gain experience by working in a magazine environment.
ART INTERNSHIP
The art intern is assigned to assist the art director and the Readings
art editors. Tasks range from art and production (researching, page
layout, color separation) to clerical (making photocopies, phone work,
return of materials). The diversity of tasks depends largely on
initiative and self-motivation.
This is an unpaid, part-time position. Hours are from 11-6, two days a
week with an hour off for lunch. Some flexibility is possible and can be
discussed in individual cases. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide
aid in terms of housing or transportation.

more than 500 words, explaining why you would like to take part in the
internship program and letting us know something about yourself-your

ASSIGNMENT
1. List five of each of your favorite fine artists, photographers, and
illustrators.
2. List five magazines you read regularly and five more you wish you did.
3. List five of your favorite films. Of these, select two and explain
briefly (100 words or less) why you like them.
4. What is your familiarity with computers, specifically Quark XPress,
Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator for Macintosh?
5. Write two short paragraphs: one detailing your organizational
abilities and the other describing any research experience you may have
had. Use specific examples from your experience to demonstrate your
ability to juggle several projects at once and to meet deadlines.
6. List the potential sources you would contact to try and track down
each of the following
(answers are irrelevant-DO NOT actually contact any of them).
a. Archival photos of members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, a
battalion of American
soldiers who fought in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39.
b. Advertisements from around the turn of the century for patent
medicines containing
opium.
c. Non-commissioned (i.e., photos or paintings that already exist)
artwork that would be
suitable to accompany a memoir written by a pathologist about treating a
patient who has breast cancer.
EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP
Each intern is assigned to assist particular editors, while
participating in the more general tasks shared by all interns, such as
researching the Harpers Index and reading unsolicited manuscripts. The
range of responsibilities and level of challenge depend largely on
initiative and self-motivation. Interns are always welcome to suggest
ideas, for instance, and to try to generate material for any section of
the magazine.
These are unpaid, full-time positions. Interns are expected to work from
10-6 with an hour off for lunch. Some flexibility is possible and can be

In Style Internship Program
WHO: Our intern program is open to undergraduates (juniors and seniors),
graduate students, and to graduates who have received their degrees
within the past 12 months. You do not have to be studying journalism and
you do not need your schools endorsement to apply.
WHAT: What do In Style interns do? The tasks of each intern vary widely,
depending on which department you work with. But all interns can expect
the usual entry-level tasks, like answering phones, making copies,
sending faxes. We also use interns to maintain our databases of
forthcoming celebrity events and fashion and beauty products, to answer
reader mail (we get a lot!), to obtain and return photos and clothes
used in fashion shoots, and to research articles.
WHEN: There are three terms: Summer (June through August), Fall
(late-August/September through December), and Spring (January through
May). The application deadline for the Summer program is March 15; the
Fall application deadline is July 15; the Spring application deadline is
Oct. 15. To make internships available to as many as possible, we limit
participants to one term. We pay $6 an hour. You would be responsible
for finding and paying for your own housing.
WHERE: In Style editorial internships take place in the Time & Life
Building, located in Rockefeller Center, in the heart of New York City.
All interns must be available to work full-time, Monday through Friday,
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Newsweek has a paid, 13-week summer internship program designed for
college students entering their senior year, graduating seniors,

part-time internships available with the Sports Illustrated
Communications Department.
Background:
The mission of the Sports Illustrated Communications Department is to
enhance the Sports Illustrated franchise in the areas of external and
internal public relations, publicity and charity outreach. The franchise
includes the following publications and properties: Sports Illustrated,
Sports Illustrated For Kids, SI.com, Sports Illustrated on Campus and SI
Presents. Interns in the Communications Department will actively assist
the staff in working on each of these publications and properties.
The weekly duties of an intern are varied and range from office support
to significant interaction with some of the biggest names in the sports
world. Some duties include writing and distributing press releases,
pitching stories, compiling publicity materials and acting as a liaison
between SI writers/editors and the press. Recent interns have landed
permanent positions with organizations such as the NFL, Edelman (a
global public relations firm), the Seattle Supersonics and Fortune
magazine ¬ to mention Sports Illustrated.
